Custom Guitar Building

Factories strive for perfection. Artists strive for excellence. My goal is excellence.

Choose your materials and get to know your guitar inside and out as I build it.

I ENJOY BUILDING A GUITAR FOR A SPECIFIC PLAYER.

This means we can talk about the kind of music you want to play and the sound you want.

The face or top wood will have more to do with the guitar’s sound than any other factor.  But the back and side wood and their bracing will also shape the sound. The bridge pins can be more important to the sound than the back and side wood because they connect the strings to the bridge and bridge plate and thus the soundboard.  There is a lot to talk about just in these few elements.

What kind of fretboard do you want to play, Ebony, Rosewood, Maple?

There are many artistic choices, for example the binding and trim woods like the headstock veneer, the butt strap, and the heel piece. Would you like to participate in choosing your rosette and bridge? Do you want a dark or light binding? I only use solid wood for bindings so please don’t ask for plastic. Do you want a pickguard? I like to use Gotoh tuning keys but if you like Waverly, Schaller, or Grover we can use those.

If you’re interested in learning what makes a guitar sound like we want it to, I’m happy to take photographs as I build yours and talk with you once a week about what’s going on and why and how I do what I do.   It can be a collaborative and learning experience.  Here’s a reference from a customer who’s had the experience.
